Fact About Soilless Farming - 4

In the last article on this series, the focus was on water requirements for Soilless Farming in comparison with traditional soil farming, Labor and Manpower Requirements, and the health Hazards exposure common to traditional soil farming practices compared to Soilless Farming.

In this article, the focus is on The sustainability of Soilless Farming compared to the traditional soil farming in the area of farming cycles, food availability, and scalability.

Farming Cycles

Basically, the traditional soil farming practices are carried out in seasons in different regions around the world.

Usually, it could be a couple of months within a year, depending on the geographic location, and factors such as weather, ecology and the amount of daylight available.

But with Soilless Farming, the crops are in a structured and well monitored environment, and all the factors that necessitates seasonal farming are controlled, making it possible for all year round farming.

Food Availability And Sustainability

Since Soilless Farming is carried out all year round, all kinds of vegetables, fruits vegetables, tubers and fruits can be produced, making them available all year round for consumption. This farming practice maybe what's needed to meet the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, as well as the food consumption needs of the growing human population that is projected at 10Billion by year 2050.

Scalability

One of the major factor against the traditional soil farming practice is scalability. This is because farmers that's growing food is expecting a good yield and output so it will be possible to reinvest part of the proceeds towards expanding the size of the farm which in turn will increase the quantity of yield and output, but such hopes and expectations are more often not realized sustainably when the unexpected happens like drought, weather, environmental and ecological factors as a result of a drastic climate change, making the risk against scalability to be higher.

With Soilless Farming, the environment is structured and controlled to insulate the plant against those factors that are working against the traditional soil farming systems, drastically reducing the risk and making it highly scalable.
